either fujitsu siemens or hp pavilion are really good makes for the graphics, memory, storage and other specs but you need to make sure that is has a good processor to deal everything.
Go with Mac if you have the cash to do it. Although I would not recommend a Macbook Air, I have not heard good things about them. Just go with a Powerbook
You can’t go wrong and I personally recommend Dell! There are hidden long-run costs that one does not initially see when you purchase a Notebook PC other than Dell, HP or IBM and later encounter difficulties or attempt buying replacement parts like a battery, or say a keyboard etc.
Also since you’re buying for college then I do NOT recommend a Notebook PC bigger than 15.4" bec we have 3 DELLs incl a larger 17" Notebook PC and the larger ones are nice but much too heavy to lug around campus as well as too big for lecture hall desks in college…
I mentioned we own 3 Dell Notebook PCs and why I recommend DELL, HP or IBM for those living in the United States is that those 3 particular PC Notebook manufacturers literally supply all the business Notebook PCs to the major corporations and Government so replacement parts are readily available esp on EBAY at even a more reasonable price than the manufacturer website. Thus in the long run, being able to get the exact replacement part extends the life on your investment.
FYI my 1st Notebook PC was Gateway bec I couldn’t afford Dell at the time and what a mistake is was when I needed to purchase a new Notebook battery <= costly bec not readily available like Dells… and FYI I also ran into a similar problem when attempting to upgrade the memory.
Note if you are looking for DELL bargains, then visit their DELL OUTLET site…
Hope the Above Info Helps!
My suggestion is don’t really on the brand name instead look on the hardware specification of the unit which is suitable for the nature of work. Brand name is only a trademark choose the appropriate specs.

a lot are good. toshiba, hp, asus. this is a cheap laptop for the specs. macbook air is ok but no cd/dvd drive. and small screen too. all opinion just like some like dell. i have had hp for a long time. and great support from both hp and my asus.
macs are great for what they do but cost a lot more then a laptop. you can spend less money on a laptop and do just as much as a mac if not more. the one i gave you can play newest games that are out and on highest settings. macs cant. and for a fraction of a cost as a mac.
and brand name does help. you dont want to go with acer if 50 percent of there computers are not good or break after 6 months. not saying that is the case just showing an example. however you dont need to spend top notch dollars on a alienware either. i like the one i gave because it is a great gaming laptop. gaming dont get that title in your head and stick to it. gaming laptops useally mean it has great specs. and most of the time if it can play games well it will do everything else as well.
