Oook. Lots of bad answers so far. You have 2 real options here.

If you are in the least bit technical, or are willing to learn, you can build your own computer. This is a lot of fun and you can really customize your hardware to exactly what you need. This will require a bit of researching and labor, but can be very rewarding. This is best for computer users who know EXACTLY what they want. Or gamers who want to build a competitive rig on a budget.

If you are just looking for a simple computer without big frills that performs well in all circumstances, my recommendation is to go with Dell. Don’t listen to the nay-sayers. I had a $1200 Dell desktop for 6 years and had ZERO issues with it. The only reason I’m not using it now is that it became dated and I needed a gaming machine (so I built my own). Dell has very high quality with desktops. In the past few months, Dell has been selling desktops that are cheaper than if you built them with the exact components from Newegg.
Your best bet is to research a ~little~ what the different components do, so you know what you need. Then find one on the Dell website and order it.
If you want to same more cash on this route, google for the Dell Outlet store. You can save hundreds here.
Also lookout for 24 and 48hr sales. Dell will take a specific computer and chop 1-500$ off of them and sell it for only a day or so. I got my monitor this way for $100 off and my brother got his desktop for $300 off. Keep an eye out and do a little bit of research and you can get a good machine for not a lot of cash.

I would recommended going to search Alienware. I have my Degree in Computer Support and Alienware is the best brand you can get. It will be costy though.. If not go to http://www.ibuypower.com and look through those..

It really depends on what your going to be using your desktop for.. Alienware = perfect gaming.. Ha.

Don’t buy it from a brand like ACER or DELL. Buy it from a computer retailer who sell individual parts and get them to put it together or do it your self and save a few dollars. If you have unlimited money i would go for
    i-7 prosessor
    i-7 compatable motherboard
    4g ddr3 ram’
    blueray drive
    1g samsung hdd
    corshair vx-550 psu
    coolmaster rc-690 case
ATI 5850- or 5870 graphics card

All of this would make a very powerfull computer for the future. And would pimp slap any allian ware machine and cost less.

Alienware has the best quality but is expensive.
Emachines is one of the cheapest but comes with a lot of bloatware.

  • A Name Goes Right Here:

Hippiexchild is a perfect example of how CS majors can finesse code, but know absolutely nothing about hardware.

First off, ibuypower is TOTAL GARBAGE. Their products are cheap crap and the support is legendary for being so horrifically awful.

Alienware is just that: Overpriced. Why pay more when you can get the same thing for less all over the place?

In any case, OP should just build his own. There’s no need to pay someone else to do it when you can select exactly what you want.

go to newegg.com and build one. its cheap, and you can o.c. the ones you build xD

go wit the amd phenom 2 x4 965 black edition
and 2-4gb of ram (try and get ddr3)
get a mobo that suports that cpu (its an am3 socket) and (find one that has DDR3 mem)
**ddr3 mem goes up to 2133mhz so far, so look for a mobo wit that.. i think msi has one
and get a beast ofa vid card (preferably the radeon hd 5900 series xD(evn better in dual or triple configs)

  • Ben:

"Don’t worry about price" is a bad thing to say :)

    Mac pro: 2 x 2.93 GHz Intel Xeon Processors, 32GB DDR3 RAM, 2TB 7200RPM hard drive, 4x Nvidia Geforce 120 GT. Cost: $10,000
