What is the best desktop computer I can Build/Buy for under $1000?
I want to spend a max of 00 on a new computer and I need some advice from everyone on which is the biggest bang for my buck. Also I wanted it geared towards a gaming PC.
(Already Have an LCD monitor)
Get a Dell XPS.
Here are the specs I recommend for gaming.
1) Intel core 2 duo or quad with at least 2.8 ghz
2) 3 or 4 gb of ram
3) Windows XP media Center or Windows Vista Ultimate
4) At least a 500 GB hard drive, probably more
5) A good monitor (at least a 19" one I know you said you have one)
6) A 512 MB nVidia GeForce 8600 or higher

the desktop I have is an emachine. they are pretty close to the cheapest desktops you can buy…and a little secret, they are the same exact as gateway, just different label. I’m not sure how heavy into gaming you are, but the one I have started out at $600 some odd dollars, before upgrading certain things, bringing me just under one grand. I play sims2 on mine, I have every expansion installed on it, as well as graphics editing programs, games off of the emachines game console for the kids, thousands of pics, etc…[[just to show you how well this holds up]], my sims2 game still runs as if I just bought this computer. I actually bought this pc, just to be able to play sims2.
It depends on what kinds of games you want to play. If you stay away from the latest "shooters" such as Crysis you can get there fairly cheap. If you want to play Crysis in all it’s glory, you will probably end up spending close to $7,000 with a 30"+ monitor and any sales tax.
I would start here for a base.

I would swap the 7200 rpm drive to a 10,000 RPM drive. That puts it around $920.
Building is ALOT cheaper then buying a brand name pre-built PC.. E-mail me at venality1-at-gmail-dot-com and i can help you pick out some parts "i can get you a computer that can run crysis on max for $900"

Or Even Better
Buy the parts individually, trust me, you can get a supercomputer for around $400-$500.
