there is not one specific brand of computer that is better than another, Rather what is used to build the computer that makes it either suited for your needs or not.
Make sure you get a fast processor, lots of memory, etc to suit your needs, oh and a larger monitor always helps too.
If you want something cheap, fast and easy to use, go to ebay and get a used Dell GX 270 or GX 280 with a 2.8 or higher hyperthreading processor. They cost about $200 and usually come with Windows XP Pro. These are very nice little computers for a very good price.
Apart from that, a good custom built computer is really hard to beat. Something with an ASUS or ABIT motherboard, a good processor, and 2GB+ of RAM would be a very nice computer. Alienware is probably the best as far as off-the-shelf computers go, but with the exception of running demanding business applications or gaming, there really isn’t one manufacturer that is much better than the other.

Get a workstation from ebay – they are more powerful and cheaper than if you buy a normal PC.
